Auto-Phoropter

Auto-Phoropter

This device allows the doctor to perform refractions (to determine your necessary eye corrections) digitally, which makes your visit just that much faster and more accurate. Readings are taken by the Auto-Phoropter and entered directly into our computer system for a quick determination of what correction(s) you may need.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

OCT Maestro

By using our OCT, Dr. Verna can get a deeper view each of your retina’s distinctive layers.  This allows her to map and measure their various thicknesses of each layer. These measurements help with diagnosis and also provide treatment guidance for glaucoma and other diseases of the retina. These retinal diseases include age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye disease.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

You will sit in front of our OCT machine and rest your head on a support to keep it motionless. The equipment will then scan your eye without touching it. Scanning takes about 5 – 10 minutes. If your eyes were dilated, they may be sensitive to light for several hours after the exam.

Dr. Verna will share with you the results of your OCT test, and you'll be able to see deep inside your own eye!

DETECTING DISEASE WITH THE OCT

An OCT exam can detect early signs of numerous diseases that affect not only your eyes and your sight, but also your overall health. The results help Dr. Verna identify abnormalities that could indicate the onset of a number of diseases that often present first in the retina. In these instances, individuals typically do not experience any pain or outward symptoms.

Cancer
Melanomas can grow undetected within the retina. If discovered early, these masses can be treated before they cause serious damage and spread to other areas of the body through the bloodstream.

Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Caused by changes in the retina due to the body’s aging process, AMD blurs the sharp, central vision.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
Often the first indicators of high blood pressure, compromised blood vessels, appear in the retina and may signify increased pressure in the blood vessels throughout your body.

Retinal Detachment (RD)
When the retina detaches, it is lifted or pulled from the wall of the eye and, if not properly treated, can cause permanent vision loss.

Glaucoma
Excess fluids within the eye elevate the intraocular pressure, which pushes against the optic nerve and can cause permanent vision loss.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR)
A leading cause of blindness, DR occurs when diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels inside the retina.

WHAT IS THE OCULUS?

Oculus Pic

The OCULUS Keratograph® 5M is a groundbreaking piece of imaging equipment that changes the way we diagnose and treat eye diseases. This brand new machine is among the latest advances in optometry, it is especially useful for testing, diagnosing and treating dry eye disease.

HOW DOES THE OCULUS KERATOGRAPH® 5 WORK?

The OCULUS Keratograph® 5M integrates a high definition camera, keratometer, and corneal topographer into one seamless and state-of-the-art imaging machine. Surface eye diseases are no match for this precise and innovative tool, which integrates with computer technology to create detailed, full-color digital images of your eye.

If you have dry eye disease, we will use the round camera lens to examine your Meibomian (tarsal) glands. These glands produce the oil layer of your tear film, which keeps them from drying out and evaporating. The Keratograph allows us test the break-up time of your tear film, the height of your tear meniscus, and the condition of your eye’s lipid layer.

WHAT DOES IT DO FOR ME?

The OCULUS Keratograph® 5M offers the following benefits to you:

  • We can take high-resolution pictures of your eye in a non-invasive way

  • We offer a wide variety of different types of tests and provide a detailed analysis of our findings

  • You gain more insight into your particular condition(s) and needs

OPTOMAP

Optomap

Getting an Optomap image is fast, painless and comfortable. Nothing touches your eye at any time. It is suitable for the whole family. To have the exam, you simply look into the device one eye at a time (like looking through a keyhole) and you will see a comfortable flash of light to let you know the image of your retina has been taken.

Under normal circumstances, dilation drops might not be necessary, but the doctor will decide if your pupils need to be dilated depending on your conditions. The capture takes less than a second. Images are available immediately for review. You can even see your own retina. You see exactly what your doctor sees - even in a 3D animation.

The unique Optomap Ultra-Widefield View helps your doctor detect early signs of retinal disease more effectively and efficiently than with traditional eye exams.

OPTOMAP RETINAL IMAGING

Annual eye exams are vital to maintaining your vision and overall health

These exams not only allow your eye doctor to improve the quality of your vision by changing the prescription of your glasses or contact lenses, but also provide the opportunity to determine the overall health of your eye – from the clear window of the eye (the cornea) to the very back of the eye (the retina).

Our office highly recommends that you have an Optomap Retinal Exam as part of your eye exam. The retina is the part of your eye that captures the image of what you are looking at, similar to film in a camera. The Optomap Retinal Exam produces a wide view image the doctor can use to confirm your retinal health or discover signs of abnormalities or disease.

Many eye problems can develop without you knowing or even noticing any change in your sight. But, diseases such as macular degenerationglaucoma, retinal tears or detachments, and other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be detected with a thorough exam of the retina.

AN OPTOMAP RETINAL EXAM PROVIDES:

  • A scan to confirm a healthy eye, or to detect the presence of a disease.

An overview or map of the retina, giving your doctor a more detailed view than can be achieved by other means.

  • The opportunity for you to view and discuss the retinal image of your eye with your doctor at the time of your exam.
  • A permanent record for your medical file, which allows your doctor to view your images each year to look for changes.
  • A quick, painless test that may eliminate the need for dilation drops.

The Optomap Retinal Exam is fast, easy, and comfortable for all ages. To have the exam, you simply look into the device one eye at a time and you will see a comfortable flash of light to let you know the image of your retina has been taken. The Optomap image is shown immediately on a computer screen so we can review it with you. The Optomap does not require dilation drops, therefore, patients can return directly to school or work without visual side effects.
